Dominican Republic | Courts for Students

Burns, M.
volunteer from District of Columbia
in Dominican Republic

The goal of this project is to provide the community with a safe, public space for youth to constructively use their free time through playing sports. A community with very few safe and reliable gathering spaces, the youth have little opportunity to enrich their free time. Having a safe and accessible multipurpose court will encourage youth to be more engaged in their community through their involvement in the project planning process. The court will also provide them with access to fun, healthy, and productive hobbies that may prevent the incidence of chronic disease (such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes) in the community.

This project is a collaborative effort between the community, and a United States-based nonprofit organization that works to assist impoverished communities around the world in providing sports courts and other safe play spaces. The funds solicited through this grant will be used to supplement the monetary, land and labor contributions of the community and the monetary and material contributions from the organization in order to construct a multipurpose court.
