The local public library is currently the community’s center for information, technology, and developmental tools. It offers many modern services including a projector, LEGO robotics, media education, WiFi, and Computers. However, the library is in a building which is nearly 100 years old and is in need of renovation. With this renovation we plan to increase the number of services, as well as improve our existing ones through better organization and training facilities.

Since most of our users are young women and men, we plan to host a youth leadership course as well as develop a youth council composed in equal parts of young women and men, provide extracurricular activities coordinated with the school curriculum, as well as host a series of presentations and films directed at empowerment of young women with discussions and guest speakers.

We determined that a renovation would be the best use of grant funds through a survey in February 2017 which asked what locals would like to see from the library. The library also has many pieces of modern equipment, however, it does not have reliable access to electricity, space efficient bookshelves, or a smooth surface to put them on. The Mayor’s office has agreed to pay a cash contribution of 25% and some have volunteered to help with renovations. Renovating will allow us to improve the way we interact with young women and, subsequently, the way in which they interact with their community.
