Cameroon | Malaria Prevention, Mitigation and Awarness

Kurland, R.

This project consists of 4 phases, and is designed to increase awareness of Malaria prevention and mitigation, as well as to help community members understand the impacts of malaria on families and communities. The first phase of the project will consist of the training of peer educators in malaria basics, prevention strategies, the burden of malaria on our community, and how to participate in a successful peer education and installation campaign.

The second phase will involve the peer educators conducting door-to-door surveys to test community members' knowledge of malaria, as well as to determine the usage and coverage rate of LLINs in the community. This phase will allow us to not only pre-test community members' knowledge, but also to determine the number of LLINs that will need to be distributed and/or installed. The next phase will involve the peer educators returning to the houses they originally surveyed to help distribute and install LLINs, as well as to provide educative talks to each household regarding malaria. They will also use these visits as an opportunity to test and provide treatment or referrals for cases of simple malaria.

The final phase of the project will involve the peer educators returning to the same houses one month later to conduct a follow-up survey (post-test), and ensure the LLINs are still being used properly. The community's primary contribution will be people power, as all of the peer educators will be members of the community's COSA committee. We hope that with this project, the rate of malaria in our community--particularly amongst pregnant women and young children--will decrease significantly following the implementation of this project. Therefore, this project intends to contribute to an increase in community knowledge of malaria, as well as a decrease in malaria morbidity.
