Support Initiative for Girls with Disabilities (SIGD) is a direct and proactive series of sessions and trainings designed to target communities that interact with and include disabled girls in Lori Marz, Armenia. The initiative is designed and curtailed to teach educators, mothers, and disabled girls and boys ages 8-15 along with their non-disabled peers about effective, positive, and proactive methods and strategies for overcoming cultural and intellectual challenges related to disabilities. What makes the project so innovative is the scope: rather than singling out one demographic (i.e. mothers of children with disabilities), the project aims at training and teaching three demographics: students, mothers, and staff at schools where the disabled youths attend.

Girls with disabilities are particularly susceptible to shaming and abandonment in Armenia because parents feel like their disabled child will never get married or have children. Bullying is common, which leads to isolation and depression. Four schools will be visited by a team of highly trained and qualified professionals, including psychologists, speech therapists, and disability assessment specialists on three separate occasions. Each all-day training is designed to engage participants in critical thinking workshops regarding the cultural connotations of disabilities, teaching participants on care and support techniques while providing activity and game ideas to maximize inclusion among disabled girls' and boys' peers and families.

This project has been designed to expand access to education for girls in Armenia as part of the Let Girls Learn Program. Learn more at
